Call us sentimental if you will, but we stand by the model of an independent art criticism. We do not see art from a neutral or academic point of view, and we expect our contributors to care. We are not interested in treating everything the same way, but in different approaches to seemingly similar things in a search for new sensibilities. Things are described, analysed, set in context, or associatively linked; they can be cast adrift, discarded, and sometimes reclaimed – all from a position close to the site of artistic production. The end result is an interweaving of art, theory, and the world. We do not impose a particular position on our authors, because we’re sceptical of authority. We present art that we consider good and relevant. In the magazine, as in our various curatorial projects, the FRUITS, FLOWERS, AND CLOUDS art fair, the Speak & Spell performance series, the Spike Unplugged lecture-performances, and our Spike parties, we aspire towards accessibility, chaos, improvisation, and fun.
